Few circumstances in life lend credence to this adage like the indescribable agony that civilians are being subjected to in the Tana Delta region here in Kenya. The heartbreaking story of a child, who upon sensing danger, climbed up a tree to hide and was brutally gunned down there, a few meters away from his mother’s home filled me with untold sadness.

In all the harrowing tales that emanate from the area, it is the agony of the children that tugs so strongly at this writer’s heart. With every attack that occurs, it becomes increasingly obvious that it is the children who are paying the heaviest price, butchered by those adult hands that should have protected them and loved them.
